Work starts October 25; full-closure dates are pending

WSDOT’s October 19 announcement says two maintenance projects near Mercer Island begin Sunday night, October 25. The work covers the eastbound Mercer Slough Bridge and the eastbound and westbound floating bridges. At least two overnight full closures of eastbound I-90 are expected, but WSDOT will issue their dates separately. Treat the start date as a prompt to check for restrictions. It does not establish a full eastbound closure on October 25. A dispatch instruction needs the specific closure notice that applies to the trip.

Keep the two projects distinct

Mercer Slough work includes bridge bearing and joint components, with completion expected in June 2027 if weather permits. Floating-bridge electrical and monitoring upgrades are expected to take about 18 months, with occasional HOV and shoulder lane closures. These are project durations rather than continuous freeway shutdowns. Our editorial recommendation is to maintain separate notes for the customer’s approach direction and interchange. A generic warning that “I-90 is under construction” is too vague to tell a driver whether a particular ramp or arrival window is affected.

Use the announced detour as a planning question

For the future full eastbound closures, WSDOT describes a detour using the Bellevue Way off-ramp, north on 112th Avenue Southeast, east on Southeast Eighth Street and south on I-405. Confirm the current notice and signs before traveling. For unusual dimensions or a permitted load, ask the carrier’s routing or permit contact to evaluate the actual equipment against the then-current instructions. Do that while there is time to clarify the move. This article does not approve a detour for every vehicle configuration.

Turn an early warning into an operating habit

Assign someone to recheck WSDOT’s travel information before a load enters the region. Save the relevant notice, check time and customer contact in one place. If access changes, send the driver an updated instruction while the truck is safely stopped. When no closure date has been announced, keep the question open instead of inventing one in a customer message. Once dates are published, compare the actual delivery schedule, available driving time and parking plan. That makes the early announcement useful without pretending it supplies a complete trip plan.
