Seattle I-5 Lane Relief Could Follow One More Full Northbound Closure

Published · TRACKS™ Editorial

WSDOT says Ship Canal Bridge lane reductions could end as early as October 30–November 2. Removing the work zone requires a full northbound closure and suitable weather.

WSDOT identifies October 30–November 2 as the earliest potential work-zone removal weekend, requiring a full northbound I-5 closure from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street.

An approaching change with a closure attached

WSDOT’s October 21 update says the long-term northbound I-5 lane reductions at Seattle’s Ship Canal Bridge could be removed as early as the October 30–November 2 weekend, if work stays on schedule and weather cooperates. Removing the work zone requires a weekend-long full northbound I-5 closure from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street. That date range is conditional. The announcement does not supply exact start and end hours. Carriers should watch for the specific closure instructions before changing an appointment or issuing a final route.

Plan for the transition, not just the improvement

Our editorial recommendation is to flag loads that may approach the affected stretch during that weekend. Identify the customer’s location, the truck’s direction of travel and any timed receiving obligation. An expected improvement after the work is complete cannot be used as the travel assumption during the work-zone removal itself. Give someone responsibility for checking the updated notice close to departure. If a customer needs a firm arrival, explain which route information is still pending and agree on when to confirm it. Avoid putting an invented delay allowance into the appointment discussion.

What happens if weather changes the plan

WSDOT says the removal needs dry conditions. If a suitable weekend is unavailable, the existing lane reductions will stay until crews can complete the work. Express lanes are to return to normal operations once the work zone is removed. Treat both outcomes as planning branches: removal goes ahead, or the current arrangement continues. Dispatch should verify which applies instead of letting an early calendar entry become a permanent instruction. The driver’s current road signs and official travel information remain necessary on the actual trip.

Keep the follow-up beyond the milestone

The agency also expects some later overnight mainline closures, lane reductions and early express-lane closures for remaining maintenance. Southbound bridge work is planned for 2027. The milestone therefore does not establish an end to every restriction. For a recurring Seattle customer, retain the source, check time and latest instruction in the route notes. Review those notes before the next trip, and evaluate any alternate for the actual truck and load. A suggested route for passenger traffic may leave equipment-specific questions unresolved.
