I-294 Adds Lanes Near I-55: What Truckers Should Watch as Winter Traffic Patterns Change
Illinois Tollway says six lanes in each direction are open between I-55 and Ogden Avenue. Other I-294 changes are still coming later this month, and construction continues.

One stretch has opened; other changes are still ahead
The Illinois Tollway’s October 22 announcement reports six lanes in each direction between I-55 and Ogden Avenue. Winter configurations farther north are planned later this month, without an exact activation date. The graphics below distinguish what has opened from the forthcoming arrangements.
New capacity does not mean the work zone is finished
Construction continues through 2027. The agency identifies a 45 mph construction-season work-zone limit, weather-dependent work and overnight traffic changes. Check its Daily Construction Alert and current signs. Our interpretation for trip planning is straightforward: an opening can improve available roadway without making a familiar route predictable every night. Do not replace the current instruction with an assumption that the whole construction corridor is complete. Keep a separate field for confirmed information and for an assumption that still needs checking. That small distinction can prevent an old instruction from being passed to another driver as a fresh update.
Separate the mainline from the ramp you need
Our editorial recommendation is to write the actual movement into the trip note: direction on I-294, intended exit or connection, and the time the truck expects to arrive. A mainline lane-count headline may not answer a question about the particular ramp a load needs. Before an overnight move, check the latest Tollway alert against that movement. Give dispatch a specific question if the notice leaves something unresolved. For example, ask about the intended I-88 connection rather than whether all of I-294 is open. Confirm the route while stopped; avoid trying to sort out a changed instruction in a lane shift.

Keep appointment promises tied to the actual trip
For repeated Chicago-area deliveries, save when the route information was checked and review it again before departure. If the receiver has a narrow window, agree with dispatch on when an updated arrival estimate will be useful. Additional lanes are not a guaranteed number of minutes saved. Maintain room for an operational adjustment when the official alert changes. Any alternate needs review for the truck and load involved; this article does not establish a truck detour. The opening and forthcoming changes above are agency announcements; the dispatch suggestions are original editorial guidance. Source checked October 23, 2026.
