Mount Vernon Freight Deliveries: SR 536 Bridge Closes Both Ways Starting November 1

Published · TRACKS™ Editorial

WSDOT plans about two weeks of full closure at the Skagit River/Division Street Bridge, with a weather-dependent finish. Freight traffic must use I-5 and SR 20.

The change affects westbound trips too

WSDOT’s October 23 update announces a November 1 start for closing the SR 536 Skagit River/Division Street Bridge in Mount Vernon to non-emergency vehicles in both directions. Freight must detour using I-5 and SR 20. The agency estimates about two weeks, subject to weather. This replaces a one-direction arrangement with a full vehicle closure. For a carrier serving customers on either side of the river, the useful question is which part of the delivery plan must change before the truck arrives.

Do not turn an estimate into a reopening appointment

WSDOT warns that weather can prolong the closure and says it cannot restore one-direction traffic once the full closure starts. Its stated holiday-season reopening is a goal rather than a guarantee. Our editorial recommendation is to retain the estimated duration as a planning assumption and the actual reopening notice as a separate item. A customer appointment should not depend on a date that the agency has not confirmed. Review the official update again before each affected trip, including recurring work that may already have an established route note.

Check the address and the approach together

For a local delivery, ask dispatch to confirm the customer entrance and the approach from the assigned detour. The delivery address alone may not describe where the truck needs to enter or turn around. Contact the receiver while safely stopped if the load instruction leaves an access question unresolved. This article does not establish an equipment-specific turn-by-turn route. A truck carrying an oversized or otherwise restricted load needs its own route review. The operational goal is to resolve the approach before the driver reaches a place where changing direction would be difficult.

Give the next driver a dated route note

Our suggested handoff records the planned approach, what has been verified with the receiver, and when the road information was checked. Include a contact for an access problem, rather than simply writing that the bridge is closed. After the trip, replace assumptions with useful observations and keep them clearly dated. A report from an earlier driver can help identify a question, but it should not be treated as the agency’s current closure status. The route-planning suggestions here are original editorial guidance.
